A QUICK WALKTHROUGH

How to use this tool

  1. Enter initial and final velocity in metres per second.
  2. Enter a positive elapsed time in seconds.
  3. Calculate acceleration and signed g force equivalent.

Formula

Acceleration is the change in velocity divided by elapsed time: a = (vᶠ − vⁱ) ÷ t. The g force equivalent is a ÷ 9.81, so both acceleration and g force retain their sign.

Input limits

Velocities must be finite values from −10,000 to 10,000 m/s. Elapsed time must be from 0.001 to 100,000 seconds.

GOOD TO KNOW

Common questions

Can acceleration be negative?

Yes. A negative result means the final velocity is lower than the initial velocity over the selected time.

Is this a unit converter?

No. This calculator uses velocities in m/s and time in seconds; it calculates acceleration from those inputs.
