A QUICK WALKTHROUGH

How to use this tool

  1. Choose a raster image within the stated limits.
  2. Set the character width and optional inversion.
  3. Copy the generated ASCII text.

Local grayscale mapping

The image is decoded in this browser, sampled to a limited grid, and mapped to a fixed character ramp. No image is uploaded.

Output limits

Images are limited to 5 MB and 2,000,000 pixels. Output is limited to 160 columns and 120 rows to keep the text manageable.

Preview depends on typography

ASCII characters have different widths in proportional fonts. Use a monospace font for a more stable shape; the text is an approximation, not a vector reconstruction.

GOOD TO KNOW

Common questions

Does it create a vector image?

No. It creates plain text characters whose density approximates grayscale.

Are images uploaded?

No. File decoding and conversion happen locally in this browser.

Why does the shape change in another app?

Character width, line height, and font choice affect the visual proportions. Paste into a monospace text area for best results.
