Bulk Storage Capacity Calculator
Enter the usable geometric volume and a density for the specific grain or fresh silage being stored.
A QUICK WALKTHROUGH
How to use this tool
- Enter a non-negative volume in cubic metres.
- Enter a positive bulk density in kilograms per cubic metre.
- Review estimated tonnes; confirm density against the material you are storing.
Formula and scope
Estimated tonnes = volume (m³) × bulk density (kg/m³) ÷ 1,000. The same arithmetic applies to different bulk materials; density and fresh/dry basis must match the material.
Limitations
Does not calculate the volume of the store or account for headspace, angle of repose, consolidation, or inaccessible material. For silage, use fresh weight density; for grain, use the relevant bulk density.
Local calculation
Values are processed in this browser. No material density is recommended.
GOOD TO KNOW
Common questions
Can I use this for grain or silage?
Yes, when you enter a density appropriate to that material and basis. Silage tonnage and density should both be fresh weight.
Does this predict how much is practically usable?
No. It multiplies the entered geometric volume by density and does not model fill limits or losses.
