Color Palette Namer
Give a palette practical labels while keeping exact standard CSS names separate from nearest matches and generated descriptions. Everything runs in your browser.
A QUICK WALKTHROUGH
How to use this tool
- Enter 1–100 opaque colors, one per line or separated by semicolons.
- Generate names and inspect nearest CSS names, ΔE76 distances, duplicate warnings and contrast ratios.
- Choose CSS variables or JSON, then copy or download the export.
Standard names and generated descriptions
The fixed table follows W3C CSS Color 4 named colors, including rebeccapurple and gray/grey aliases. Exact aliases are listed together. Nearest matches use Euclidean CIE76 ΔE in CIE Lab with D65 reference white; ΔE ≤ 5 counts as near. More distant colors receive descriptive HSL hue, lightness and saturation bins. These labels are generated heuristics, not official color names or perceptual guarantees.
Opaque sRGB and bounded input
Accepts #RGB, #RRGGBB, three-channel rgb() with numbers or percentages, and standard CSS names. RGB values must be in range and are rounded to 8-bit sRGB. Alpha, transparent, currentColor, system colors and other color spaces are excluded. Any invalid entry prevents export; the maximum is 100 colors.
Duplicates, contrast and export
Every palette pair is compared in Lab; ΔE76 ≤ 5 produces a near-duplicate warning, including exact repeats. WCAG 2 relative luminance calculates contrast against solid white and black only: AA normal text requires 4.5:1, large text 3:1. Ratios do not certify a page. CSS exports unique indexed variable names and original normalized HEX values; JSON includes matching, descriptions, contrast and duplicate details. No upload or network service is used.
GOOD TO KNOW
Common questions
Does naming change my colors?
No. The normalized original 8-bit sRGB color is preserved in both exports; the nearest standard color is only a reference.
Are generated names official CSS keywords?
No. Only the 148 standard names are CSS keywords. Generated labels are descriptions; use the exported HEX values in CSS.
Why do several CSS names match one color?
The standard includes aliases such as aqua/cyan and gray/grey. Exact and nearest ties list all matching names.
