Commuting Cost Comparison Calculator

Compare user-priced car, daily transit, annual transit pass and bicycle costs over a 52-week scenario. Custom annual calendar compares car, electric vehicle, public transport and bicycle with explicit fuel, parking, toll and fixed costs.

Fractional weekly days represent user averages. No holiday calendar is applied. Enter a full commuting-day transit price and a consistent distance unit. A supplied zero pass price is a real zero; blank means no pass comparison. When N = 0, cost per commuting day is undefined. Zero daily transit cost has no finite pass break-even. Home-working output covers only avoided car expense; this is a cost scenario, not a mode recommendation. Enter 0 explicitly for unused costs. Do not overlap holidays and home days. Annual fixed costs remain even with no trips. An all-in distance price may already include fixed costs: avoid double counting. No tariff, calendar, depreciation, tax, emissions or route lookup. Scenario rows use the same selected calendar basis and all cost inputs. Fuel gallon conversions: US 3.785411784 L, imperial 4.54609 L; mile 1.609344 km.

A QUICK WALKTHROUGH

How to use this tool

  1. Compare user-priced car, daily transit, annual transit pass and bicycle costs over a 52-week scenario. Custom annual calendar compares car, electric vehicle, public transport and bicycle with explicit fuel, parking, toll and fixed costs.
  2. Calculate the result.
  3. Copy the report or download it as TXT.

Formula and units

N = (scheduled − home-working) × 52. Car daily = 2 × one-way distance × cost/unit. Each annual cost = daily cost × N; monthly = annual/12. Pass is a supplied fixed annual price; public cost is the lower available price. Break-even = pass/daily transit. Annual days or weeks × days/week, minus separately entered holidays and home days. No 52-week default. Round-trip distance = 2 × one-way. Fuel L = km × L/100km ÷100, km ÷km/L, or miles ÷mpg × gallon litres. EV kWh = distance × consumption basis. Each cost component is annualized; total/12 and total/commuting days are averages. Parking and tolls are charged once/day or twice/day for one-way-trip pricing.
