Darken Color
Enter a HEX or RGB/RGBA color and choose how much darker it should become. The channels are scaled in linear-light sRGB for predictable color behavior.
A QUICK WALKTHROUGH
How to use this tool
- Enter a HEX or RGB/RGBA color.
- Set the darkening percentage from 0% to 100%.
- Copy the resulting HEX and RGB/RGBA values.
Linear-light RGB semantics
The input is parsed as sRGB. Each red, green, and blue channel is converted to linear light, multiplied by (1 − percentage / 100), converted back to sRGB, and rounded to an 8-bit channel. This avoids treating gamma-encoded channel numbers as physical light.
Input and output formats
The tool accepts #RGB, #RGBA, #RRGGBB, #RRGGBBAA, rgb(), rgba(), and comma-separated RGB values with channels from 0 to 255. Output uses uppercase HEX and an RGB or RGBA function.
Percentage and alpha
The range control selects 0–100%. At 0% the RGB channels are unchanged; at 100% they become black. The alpha value is not darkened; HEX output rounds alpha to 8 bits and RGBA output displays up to 3 decimal places.
GOOD TO KNOW
Common questions
Does darkening use HSL lightness?
No. It uses linear-light sRGB channel scaling so the percentage has a defined light-energy meaning.
What happens to transparency?
The parsed alpha is not multiplied by the darkening percentage. HEX rounds it to an 8-bit byte and RGBA displays up to 3 decimal places.
Can I enter RGB values?
Yes. Use rgb(r, g, b), rgba(r, g, b, a), or comma-separated channels such as 102, 153, 204.
