Excavation Volume Calculator

Choose a simple shape, enter its dimensions, and optionally adjust the bank volume for loosened material using your own swell percentage.

Use one unit throughout. Swell is project-specific; enter 0 when no adjustment is wanted.

A QUICK WALKTHROUGH

How to use this tool

  1. Choose rectangular pit, trench, or cylinder.
  2. Enter positive dimensions and an optional swell percentage.
  3. Review bank volume and loose volume estimate.

Shape formulas

Rectangular pit and trench use length × width × depth. Cylinder uses π × radius² × depth. The trench and pit are separate labels for the same rectangular prism geometry.

Quantity estimate only

Swell is user supplied because material behavior varies. Results do not include haulage, compaction, voids, side slopes, over-excavation, structural design, or safety advice.

GOOD TO KNOW

Common questions

What is bank volume?

The in-place geometric volume before material is loosened.

What is loose volume?

Bank volume multiplied by 1 plus your entered swell percentage.

Does this determine a safe excavation?

No. It does not assess stability, utilities, water, equipment, access, or any safety requirement.
