Firewood Volume Converter
Enter stack dimensions, number of identical rows, a solid-wood share, and a loose-to-stacked factor. All quantities and factors are user supplied; no packing estimate is preselected.
A QUICK WALKTHROUGH
How to use this tool
- Enter the dimensions of one stack row, its unit, and the number of rows.
- Enter the solid-wood percentage and loose-to-stacked multiplier that fit your wood.
- Review volume equivalents, or enter two offers to compare their price per estimated solid volume.
Calculation
Volume of one row = length × depth × height. Total stacked volume = volume of one row × row count. Estimated solid volume = stacked volume × your solid-wood percentage. Estimated loose volume = stacked volume × your loose-to-stacked multiplier. Standard cord equivalents use 1 cord = 128 ft³.
Choose factors for your wood
Air gaps depend on log dimensions, shape, and how the wood is stacked. Loose-to-stacked ratios also vary by wood type and arrangement. The calculator leaves both factors blank for you to provide. Penn State Extension explains the standard cord dimensions and notes that solid content varies with pieces and stacking: https://extension.psu.edu/valuing-standing-timber. UNECE/FAO conversion tables publish distinct factors for different firewood categories; this calculator does not adopt one: https://cdn.forestresearch.gov.uk/2022/03/jwee2015.pdf.

GOOD TO KNOW
Common questions
What does row count mean?
Enter how many equal stack rows you have. The calculator multiplies one row’s geometric volume by that count.
Does the 65% rule apply?
No. You enter the solid-wood percentage for your own logs and stacking method; the tool does not assume a universal ratio.
How are offers compared?
For each offer, enter its price and volume in cubic metres, then identify whether that volume is stacked, loose, or solid. The comparison reports price per estimated solid cubic metre.
