Forklift Fleet Size Calculator
Use your own period-matched operating assumptions to calculate a rounded-up fleet count.
Assumes the same homogeneous fleet throughout. This is not a capacity or safety selection.
A QUICK WALKTHROUGH
How to use this tool
- Enter total forklift task hours for one planning period.
- Enter available hours per vehicle per shift, shifts in that period, and an availability factor from 0 to 1.
- Review the rounded-up count for one homogeneous fleet.
Formula and assumptions
Estimated fleet count = ceil(total task hours ÷ (available hours per vehicle per shift × shifts × availability)). The task hours and shifts must describe the same planning period. This assumes all vehicles are homogeneous and uses only your manual assumptions.
Not an equipment or safety selection
This arithmetic does not select a forklift, establish lifting capacity, or assess operational safety. Check the actual truck nameplate, attachments, load centre, load arrangement, and applicable requirements. OSHA explains that the nameplate states rated capacity and that attachments or load configuration can affect capacity: https://www.osha.gov/etools/powered-industrial-trucks/types-fundamentals/parts/name-plate
Local estimate
Inputs are calculated in your browser and are not uploaded. The result is a planning estimate, not a staffing or equipment recommendation.
GOOD TO KNOW
Common questions
Does this choose a forklift capacity?
No. It estimates only a homogeneous fleet count from the hours and availability you enter. Consult each truck nameplate and applicable operating requirements.
What does availability mean?
Enter your own fraction of scheduled hours available for the task, from 0 exclusive to 1 inclusive.
