Global Warming Potential Calculator

Multiply one selected gas mass by an explicitly listed IPCC AR6 100-year global warming potential factor.

kg CO₂-equivalent = kg gas × GWP100. IPCC AR6 (2021 WGI / 2022 WGIII), 100-year horizon, including climate–carbon feedback: CO₂ 1; CH₄ non-fossil (biogenic) 27.0; CH₄ fossil fugitive/process 29.8; CH₄ fossil combustion 27.0 under WGIII Annex II total-carbon accounting convention; N₂O 273.

Educational conversion for the five listed selections only. Methane source matters: fossil fugitive/process uses 29.8; non-fossil uses 27.0. WGIII assigns fossil combustion 27.0 where Tier 1 CO₂ emission factors already count total fuel carbon. This tool does not resolve that accounting boundary for you. No inventory verification, regulatory reporting, lifecycle boundary, emission estimation or carbon credit calculation is provided.

IPCC AR6 WGIII (2022), Annex II, Tables 9 and 11; WGI (2021), Chapter 7, Table 7.15. GWP100 is relative to CO₂ over 100 years.

A QUICK WALKTHROUGH

How to use this tool

  1. Select one gas and methane source from the limited factor table.
  2. Enter nonnegative gas mass in kilograms.
  3. Calculate, then copy or download the report.

GOOD TO KNOW

Common questions

Are these 20-year factors?

No. Only AR6 factors with a 100-year horizon are supplied.

Why distinguish methane sources?

Oxidation of fossil methane adds fossil CO₂. The combustion accounting convention avoids counting fuel carbon twice; select it only when that convention applies.
