Each byte is exactly two hexadecimal digits. Maximum 200,000 characters; processing stays in this browser.

A QUICK WALKTHROUGH

How to use this tool

  1. Enter pairs of hexadecimal digits, optionally separated by whitespace, commas, or a custom separator.
  2. Choose ASCII for strict 7-bit bytes or UTF-8 for multibyte text.
  3. Choose whether invalid bytes stop conversion or become replacement characters, then copy the result.

Bytes, not hexadecimal integers

The input is a sequence of byte tokens. Each token must contain exactly two hexadecimal digits, so leading zeroes are preserved and values above FF are rejected.

ASCII and UTF-8 are different contracts

ASCII decodes 00–7F only and rejects bytes 80–FF. UTF-8 decodes valid Unicode byte sequences, including multibyte characters; malformed sequences are handled by the selected invalid-byte option.

Separators and local handling

Choose whitespace, comma, or a custom literal separator. The entire conversion runs in this browser; input is not uploaded, executed, or interpreted as code.

GOOD TO KNOW

Common questions

Can I enter a continuous hex string?

Yes. Select No separator and enter an even number of hexadecimal digits.

What does ASCII mode accept?

Only bytes from 00 through 7F. Bytes 80 through FF are invalid in ASCII mode.

What happens to invalid UTF-8?

Strict mode reports an error. Replacement mode inserts U+FFFD for each invalid decoding segment.
