A QUICK WALKTHROUGH

How to use this tool

  1. Enter a positive focal length and f-number.
  2. Choose a sensor preset or enter a custom circle of confusion.
  3. Choose metres or feet and calculate the hyperfocal and near limits.

Formula

Hyperfocal distance H = f²/(N·c) + f. The near limit is H/2 and the far limit is infinity. Focal length and circle of confusion use millimetres.

Circle of confusion presets

Presets provide common approximate values for full-frame, APS-C, Micro Four Thirds, and 1-inch sensors. Use Custom when your output or viewing assumptions require another value.

Local estimate

All inputs are validated and calculated in your browser. This is a planning estimate based on the supplied circle of confusion, not a guarantee of perceived sharpness.

GOOD TO KNOW

Common questions

Why is the far limit infinity?

This calculator follows the requested hyperfocal approximation: once the hyperfocal distance is reached, the far limit is shown as infinity.

Can I use a custom circle of confusion?

Yes. Select Custom and enter a positive finite value in millimetres.
