Image to ASCII Art

Turn image brightness into a plain-text picture with adjustable detail and inverted shading, without uploading the image.

JPEG, PNG, or WebP · up to 20 MB and 40 megapixels. Processing stays in this browser.

100 characters

Choose 20–200 characters per row. Greater width adds detail and creates longer text.

Use this when pasting the result on a different text background.

A QUICK WALKTHROUGH

How to use this tool

  1. Choose a JPEG, PNG, or WebP image up to 20 MB.
  2. Set the output width from 20 to 200 characters and optionally invert the shading.
  3. Generate and copy the monospaced ASCII art.

Brightness becomes character density

Each output cell samples a browser-resized image, converts its color to relative luminance, then maps dark pixels to dense characters and bright pixels to spaces. The ramp is fixed and output is monochrome plain text.

Width, aspect ratio, and inversion

Choose 20–200 character columns. Output rows are estimated using a 2:1 character cell height-to-width ratio; terminals and fonts vary, so the visual proportions can differ. Invert swaps dark and light mapping for different text backgrounds.

Local and bounded processing

JPEG, PNG, and WebP files up to 20 MB and 40 megapixels are decoded in your browser. Transparent areas are composited on white. Output is limited to 1,000,000 characters; the source file is not uploaded or stored.

GOOD TO KNOW

Common questions

Which formats are supported?

JPEG, PNG, and WebP files up to 20 MB and 40 megapixels.

How does width affect the result?

Width sets the number of ASCII characters per row. Larger widths retain more detail and make longer output.

Why can the proportions look different?

The tool estimates rows for character cells about twice as tall as they are wide. Your font and terminal may use different proportions.

Is the image uploaded?

No. Decoding and conversion happen in your browser. Only the generated text is shown for you to copy.
