Enter a chmod mode such as 755, 0644, or 4755, or an ls-style permission string such as -rwxr-xr-x. This browser-only tool displays the matching permissions without changing any file.
Enter a chmod mode or an rwx permission string.
A QUICK WALKTHROUGH
How to use this tool
- Enter one octal mode or an ls-style rwx permission string.
- The optional file-type marker is detected automatically when using rwx text.
- Read or copy the matching octal and symbolic permissions.
Accepted modes
Octal input may be 0–7777, with optional leading 0 and special setuid, setgid, or sticky bits. Symbolic input must contain nine rwx positions, optionally preceded by a file-type marker such as - or d. Values above 07777 and malformed strings are rejected.
Local and read-only
All parsing happens in this page. No file is selected, uploaded, opened, or modified, and the result is not a command that executes chmod.
GOOD TO KNOW
Common questions
Does this change a file permission?
No. It only converts the text you enter and never accesses a file or calls a system permission command.
How are special bits displayed?
setuid, setgid, and sticky are shown as s or t in the appropriate execute position when the bit is present; uppercase S or T means the special bit is set while execute is absent.
