Momentum Calculator

Use kilograms, metres per second, newtons and seconds. Signed velocities and force indicate direction.

Ideal model with no external impulse. For collisions, objects must be moving toward a collision along the chosen axis.

A QUICK WALKTHROUGH

How to use this tool

  1. Choose momentum, an impulse method, or a collision model.
  2. Enter the values in SI units.
  3. Calculate and compare momentum and kinetic energy.

Formulas and assumptions

Momentum p = mv; impulse J = FΔt = m(vf − vi). Collision calculations conserve momentum in an isolated one-dimensional system. Elastic collisions conserve kinetic energy; perfectly inelastic objects share a final velocity.

GOOD TO KNOW

Common questions

Can velocities be negative?

Yes. Choose one positive direction and use negative values for the opposite direction.

What happens when initial kinetic energy is zero?

Energy-loss percentage is undefined and shown as not applicable; energy values remain available.
