Punch Card Visualizer
Type a short message to see how characters can be represented as columns of holes on a simplified educational punch card.
A QUICK WALKTHROUGH
How to use this tool
- Enter a short message of letters, numbers, and spaces.
- Generate the card to inspect the 12-row punched pattern and column labels.
- Use the visualizer as a learning aid; it is a simplified representation, not a card reader or encoding guarantee.
A classroom-style model
This workbench draws a simplified 12-row Hollerith-style card: each input character becomes one column and the row labels show the familiar zone and digit bands. It is intended for exploration and does not claim compatibility with any historical machine, format, or proprietary implementation.
Local and deliberately limited
Text stays in this browser. The visualizer accepts printable ASCII letters, digits, and spaces; other characters are shown as unsupported rather than guessed.
GOOD TO KNOW
Common questions
Does this read or write real punch-card files?
No. It only draws an educational visual representation in the browser.
Is this an official IBM tool?
No. IBM and Hollerith are historical references used to describe the educational style; this is an independent visualizer.
What happens to unsupported characters?
They remain visible in the column heading and receive no guessed holes.
