Random Coordinate Generator

Choose geographic bounds, a point count, and a sampling distribution to create coordinates locally in your browser.

Longitude bounds must be in ascending order. Split a region that crosses the date line into two runs.

A QUICK WALKTHROUGH

How to use this tool

  1. Set minimum and maximum latitude and longitude.
  2. Choose a distribution and the number of points.
  3. Generate and copy the coordinate list.

Two distributions

Uniform degrees chooses latitude uniformly in degrees. Uniform by area chooses sine(latitude) uniformly, which avoids over-sampling high latitudes on a sphere.

Region and limits

Enter an ordered latitude range from −90° to 90° and an ordered longitude range from −180° to 180°. The tool generates 1–10,000 points in the browser; it does not upload or save them.

GOOD TO KNOW

Common questions

Why does area-correct sampling use sine?

Lines of longitude converge toward the poles. Sampling sine(latitude) uniformly makes points uniform by surface area on a sphere.

Can a region cross the date line?

Enter one ordered longitude interval. Split a region crossing the date line into two runs.
