Formula and counting method

ARI = 4.71 × C/W + 0.5 × W/S − 21.43

C counts ASCII letters and digits. W counts alphanumeric groups with optional internal apostrophes. S counts nonempty word-containing chunks split by . ! ? or line breaks. Abbreviations, decimals, lists and unusual punctuation can distort the estimate. Scores are shown without clamping or rounding up to a school grade.
