Reusable vs Disposable Calculator

Enter your own item assumptions to estimate cost, modeled production emissions, waste avoided and the reuse count needed to break even.

Assumptions: reusable replacements are analysis years ÷ lifespan; disposable uses are uses/year × years; inputs are estimates, not verified lifecycle data.

Inputs stay in this browser and are not uploaded or stored.

Enter values and calculate.

A QUICK WALKTHROUGH

How to use this tool

  1. Enter your own costs, lifespan and use rate.
  2. Calculate the modeled totals and review the assumptions before using the comparison.

Input driven model

The reusable total uses upfront cost × items needed during the period plus annual maintenance. The disposable total uses unit cost × units per year × years.

Break-even assumptions

Cost break-even is the first whole disposable use whose avoided disposable cost covers the reusable upfront cost. Reusable replacements are estimated from analysis years ÷ lifespan; fractional replacement is retained for a transparent planning estimate.

Environmental scope

CO₂ and waste are modeled only from the per-item values you enter. Water, washing, transport, end-of-life and local disposal are excluded, so do not read the result as a verified eco claim.

GOOD TO KNOW

Common questions

Where do the defaults come from?

The prefilled inputs are illustrative starting values. Replace them with your own product, use and local cost data.

Does reuse automatically reduce impact?

No. The result depends on the values entered, including lifespan, maintenance and production emissions.
