Sleeper Spacing Calculator
Calculate uniform sleeper spacing from track length and number of intervals.
A QUICK WALKTHROUGH
How to use this tool
- Enter the track length in metres.
- Enter the number of equal intervals as a positive integer.
- Calculate the uniform spacing in metres and review the formula limitations.
Equal-interval arithmetic
Spacing = track length in metres ÷ number of equal intervals. The interval count must be a positive integer. Count the gaps in the measured span, rather than entering the number of sleepers.
Design limits
This calculation gives uniform geometric spacing only. It does not recommend rail sleeper spacing or approve a railway design or operating limit.

GOOD TO KNOW
Common questions
Is the interval count the number of sleepers?
No. Enter the number of equal gaps in the measured length. A simple span from the first sleeper to the last has one fewer gap than sleepers.
What units does the calculator use?
Enter track length in metres; the result is spacing in metres.
Can I use this to approve rail sleeper spacing?
No. It calculates equal-interval arithmetic only, not structural capacity, railway design, or operating limits.
