Veterinary Dehydration Deficit Calculator

Calculate fluid deficit from a previously assessed dehydration percentage and body weight.

In-browser processingNo account requiredPrivacy details ↗

Deficit (mL) = dehydration percentage / 100 × weight (kg) × 1000. Enter 8 for 8%, not 0.08. AAHA’s 2024 fluid guidelines express deficit in liters as weight × the decimal dehydration fraction.

The percentage must be supplied from a veterinary assessment. The tool does not diagnose dehydration, recommend a replacement speed, route or fluid, or include maintenance and ongoing losses. The 0–100 input range is mathematical, not a clinical recommendation. Deficit volume is not a complete fluid therapy plan.

GOOD TO KNOW

Common questions

Should I enter a percentage or a decimal fraction?

Enter the percentage number: 8 means 8%. The tool divides it by 100.

Does this determine how fast to give fluids?

No. It calculates deficit volume only from your assessed percentage; treatment decisions and monitoring require veterinary judgment.
