Video File Format Identifier
Choose one local video file for a quick signature-based container check and browser-readable duration and dimensions.
A QUICK WALKTHROUGH
How to use this tool
- Choose one file up to 500 MB with a common video extension or video MIME type.
- Inspect its first 2 MB for a supported container signature and known codec marker strings.
- Review the evidence, extension consistency, optional marker hints, and browser metadata.
Container signatures
The tool recognizes bounded signatures for ISO BMFF brands (MP4/MOV/3GP family), WebM/Matroska EBML, AVI, Ogg, MPEG transport/program streams, FLV, and ASF. An unrecognized result is reported rather than guessed.
Codec markers are only hints
Known ASCII identifiers such as avc1, hvc1, vp09, av01, V_VP9 or H264 are searched only in the first 2 MB. A match is evidence of a marker in that window, not proof of every track or exact codec configuration. No codec is inferred when no marker is found.
Local and bounded inspection
Only the first 2 MB are copied for signature scanning. Browser metadata is attempted through a temporary object URL; the file is not uploaded. File size is capped at 500 MB.
GOOD TO KNOW
Common questions
Does the extension prove the format?
No. The extension is compared with the detected container but is not used as the primary proof.
Does this replace a full media inspector?
No. It does not parse every track, bitstream, profile, level, audio codec, subtitle, bitrate, or frame rate.
