A QUICK WALKTHROUGH

How to use this tool

  1. Enter an initial delay, multiplier, retry count, and optional cap.
  2. Choose no jitter, full jitter, or equal jitter.
  3. Read each retry delay and the total retry window.

Formula and domain

For retry i starting at 0, deterministic delay dᵢ = min(cap, initial × multiplierⁱ). Retry count is the number of retries after the first delivery attempt. Initial delay must be >0, multiplier ≥1, retry count 0–20, and cap is either blank or ≥ initial. Delays are limited to 1 year and are represented as decimal seconds.

Jitter assumptions

No jitter uses dᵢ. Full jitter assumes an independent uniform sample U(0,dᵢ), so the expected delay is dᵢ/2. Equal jitter assumes dᵢ/2 + U(0,dᵢ/2), so the range is [dᵢ/2,dᵢ] and the expected delay is 3dᵢ/4. The displayed total is the deterministic total and its corresponding range; this is not a network delivery guarantee.

GOOD TO KNOW

Common questions

Does retry count include the first attempt?

No. It counts retries after the initial delivery attempt.

Is jitter randomised by this page?

No. It reports the distribution range and expected value; no request is sent and no random sample is used.

Can I model unlimited retries?

No. The interface limits the retry count to 20 to keep the schedule bounded.
