Add or remove line numbers
A QUICK WALKTHROUGH
How to use this tool
- Paste up to 50,000 characters of text.
- Choose Add or Remove. For adding, set the starting number and separator, and choose whether blank lines receive numbers.
- Review and copy the result or download it as a text file.
Line numbering options
Add mode starts at a whole number from 1 to 1,000,000,000 and uses your chosen separator. Blank lines are left untouched by default; you can include them in the sequence. Remove mode strips a leading integer followed by a common separator or whitespace. It does not renumber the remaining lines.
Local text processing
Text stays in this browser. Input is limited to 50,000 characters, the separator to 20 characters, and generated output to 500,000 characters. Remove mode only recognizes prefixes at the start of each line; review the result before using it.
GOOD TO KNOW
Common questions
Can I number blank lines?
Yes. Turn on Number blank lines; otherwise blank and whitespace-only lines stay unchanged and do not use a number.
Which prefixes can Remove mode strip?
It recognizes a leading integer followed by whitespace or a common mark such as a period, colon, closing parenthesis, bracket, or hyphen.
Is my text uploaded?
No. Numbering and prefix removal run locally in your browser.
