Color Name Lookup
Enter a color to compare it with the fixed CSS named-color table. Results are ranked by channel distance; equal distances retain table order.
A QUICK WALKTHROUGH
How to use this tool
- Enter a 3- or 6-digit HEX value, or an RGB/RGBA color.
- Choose how many nearest names to show (1–10).
- Review the color swatches and RGB channel distances.
Defined comparison space
The fixed table of 148 CSS named colors is ranked by Euclidean distance between 8-bit sRGB red, green, and blue channels. This simple RGB distance does not model human perception. Equal distances retain the table order.
Accepted colors and results
The input accepts 3- or 6-digit HEX, RGB, or RGBA text; alpha does not affect the RGB comparison. The CSS table contains aliases such as aqua/cyan and gray/grey, so a nearest name is only a reference.
Accessibility context
A color name or distance does not certify contrast, readability, or accessibility. Evaluate the actual foreground, background, text size, weight, and interface context separately.
GOOD TO KNOW
Common questions
Does the nearest name change my color?
No. It is only a label reference; the input color remains unchanged.
Why can multiple names be close?
CSS includes color aliases, and different colors can have similar or equal RGB channel distances.
Is RGB distance perceptual?
No. It is a reproducible channel-distance measure, not a perceptual color-difference model.
