Component Recovery Calculator
Compare the same component on a clearly selected molar or mass basis. Enter component flow directly, or enter total stream flow and component fraction for each stream.
A QUICK WALKTHROUGH
How to use this tool
- Choose direct component flow or total flow with component fraction.
- Select molar or mass basis and enter compatible units for both feed and product.
- Calculate the product component amount divided by the feed component amount, times 100%.
One consistent basis
The numerator and denominator must represent the same component on the same basis (molar or mass) and use compatible flow units.
Two input methods
Enter component flow directly, or calculate it as total stream flow × component fraction. The fraction must be from 0 to 1.
Scope
This is a material-balance ratio calculator. It does not select process conditions or assess equipment or safety. Formula reference: University of Michigan, https://websites.umich.edu/~elements/7e/02chap/summary-example1.html
GOOD TO KNOW
Common questions
Can recovery exceed 100%?
The arithmetic can return over 100% if the entered product component amount exceeds the feed amount. Check that both streams and bases are comparable.
Can I mix mass and molar flow?
No. Use one basis for both streams.
What is the formula?
Recovery (%) = product component amount ÷ feed component amount × 100.
