Crosswind Component Calculator

Enter wind direction, runway heading, and wind speed to resolve the vector components.

In-browser processingNo account requiredPrivacy details ↗

This is a simple vector calculation, not meteorological or aviation operational guidance. Do not use it for flight decisions or safety. Speed components use the same unit as the entered speed. With a = (wind direction − runway heading) × π/180, headwind = speed × cos(a) and signed crosswind = speed × sin(a). Displayed angle difference is |wind direction − runway heading| % 360, not the shortest angle.

Inputs stay in this browser; nothing is uploaded or saved.

A QUICK WALKTHROUGH

How to use this tool

  1. Enter wind direction and runway heading in degrees true.
  2. Enter wind speed in any consistent unit.
  3. Review headwind/tailwind, crosswind, and angle difference.

Vector calculation only

The wind vector is resolved relative to the entered runway heading. Direction conventions, gusts, runway conditions, aircraft limits, and operational procedures are outside this calculation.

GOOD TO KNOW

Common questions

Is this flight advice?

No. Do not use it for flight decisions or safety.

What does positive headwind mean?

A positive cosine component is shown as headwind; a negative value is shown as tailwind.
