A QUICK WALKTHROUGH

How to use this tool

  1. Enter a rate and choose bit/s or byte/s with an SI or IEC prefix.
  2. Convert to another rate unit, or add a duration to estimate file size.
  3. Optionally enter a file size to estimate transfer duration at the entered rate.

Bits, bytes, and prefixes

bit/s and byte/s are different: 1 byte/s = 8 bit/s. SI prefixes use powers of 1000 (k, M, G, T); IEC prefixes use powers of 1024 (Ki, Mi, Gi, Ti). Mbps means megabits per second, while MB/s means megabytes per second.

Estimates

A duration estimate uses file size in bytes × 8 ÷ rate in bit/s. A file-size estimate uses rate in bit/s × duration ÷ 8. Results are theoretical and exclude protocol overhead, congestion, and throttling.

Local processing

All calculations run in your browser. No rate, duration, or file-size data is uploaded.

GOOD TO KNOW

Common questions

Is Mbps the same as MB/s?

No. Mbps is megabits per second; MB/s is megabytes per second. Divide Mbps by 8 to get MB/s when both use decimal prefixes.

What is the difference between MB and MiB?

MB is 1,000,000 bytes (SI); MiB is 1,048,576 bytes (IEC).
