Extract First Word Each Line
Paste multi-line text and return the first word found on every line, preserving line structure.
Unicode letters and numbers form words. Punctuation and whitespace are skipped; empty lines stay empty.
A QUICK WALKTHROUGH
How to use this tool
- Enter up to 100,000 characters.
- Extract the first word from each line.
- Copy or download the result.
Unicode word tokens
Each line returns its first contiguous run of Unicode letters or numbers. Combining marks attached to a letter remain part of that token. Punctuation, symbols, and whitespace are skipped until a token begins; punctuation after the token is excluded.
Lines and empty input
LF, CRLF, and CR line endings are recognized and reproduced as LF-separated output lines. Empty and whitespace-only lines produce empty output lines, and an input ending with a line break keeps that final empty line. Processing stays in this browser.

Common questions
What counts as a word?
A word is a contiguous run of Unicode letters and numbers, with combining marks attached to it.
Are punctuation and spaces included?
No. They are skipped before the first word and excluded after it.
What happens on an empty line?
It produces an empty output line so the line structure is preserved.
