A 256-bit one-way digest
SHA-256 is designed to be one-way. The digest is useful for comparison and integrity checks, but it cannot decrypt or reliably recover the original text.
Input size limit
The tool accepts up to 1 MiB of text as entered in the browser. Spaces, punctuation, line breaks, and Unicode characters all affect the digest.

Can SHA-256 decrypt text?
No. SHA-256 is a one-way hash, not encryption, so there is no decrypt operation that recovers the original input.
Is my text uploaded?
No. Hashing happens locally in your browser through the Web Crypto API.
Why is the result 64 characters?
SHA-256 produces 256 bits. Written as two hexadecimal characters per byte, that is 64 lowercase hexadecimal characters.
Does whitespace affect the hash?
Yes. Every input byte matters, including spaces, tabs, line breaks, and Unicode characters.
