Use RMS line voltage. For three-phase systems, voltage means line-to-line voltage.

Single-phase: I = kVA × 1000 ÷ V · Three-phase: I = kVA × 1000 ÷ (√3 × VLL)

A QUICK WALKTHROUGH

How to use this tool

  1. Enter apparent power in kVA and RMS line voltage.
  2. Choose single-phase or three-phase; three-phase voltage is line-to-line voltage.
  3. Calculate the resulting current in amps.

Formula and phase boundary

Single-phase: I = kVA × 1000 ÷ V. Three-phase: I = kVA × 1000 ÷ (√3 × VLL). Three-phase voltage must be RMS line-to-line voltage.

Calculation boundary

This is a calculation aid using entered values. It does not measure a circuit or size conductors, breakers, generators, or equipment.

GOOD TO KNOW

Common questions

What voltage should I use for three-phase?

Use RMS line-to-line voltage (VLL).

Does this include power factor?

No. kVA is apparent power, so power factor is not needed for this conversion.

Can I use phase-to-neutral voltage for three-phase?

No. Convert to or enter line-to-line RMS voltage before calculating.
