Bearing Between Points Calculator

Find the clockwise bearing between two points where X increases east and Y increases north.

In-browser processingNo account requiredPrivacy details ↗

Uses a flat Cartesian plane: X increases east and Y increases north. Bearing is measured clockwise from north. Declination is optional, east-positive, and is only applied when entered.

Coordinates stay in this browser; nothing is sent.

A QUICK WALKTHROUGH

How to use this tool

  1. Enter the start and end X/Y coordinates.
  2. Optionally enter an explicit east-positive magnetic declination.
  3. Review true bearing, reverse bearing, optional magnetic bearing, and planar distance.

Planar calculation

The tool uses atan2(ΔX, ΔY), normalized to 0°–360° clockwise from north. It does not calculate a great-circle route on Earth.

Declination comes from you

No location, date, or geomagnetic model is queried. When you explicitly enter east-positive declination, magnetic bearing = true bearing − declination.

GOOD TO KNOW

Common questions

Can I enter latitude and longitude?

No. Inputs are X/Y values in one flat coordinate system, not coordinates for a great-circle route.

Where does magnetic declination come from?

Obtain it from a trustworthy source for the relevant location and date, then enter it manually.

What coordinate units can I use?

Any consistent linear unit works; the distance result uses that same unit.
