Code tool

Derivative Calculator

Enter an expression in x. Use integer constants, explicit + - * /, parentheses, integer powers and sin, cos, exp or ln.

In-browser processingNo account requiredPrivacy details ↗

Use * for multiplication and ^ followed by a signed integer from −20 to 20. Constants: 0–1,000,000. Only lowercase x, sin(...), cos(...), exp(...) and ln(...). Decimals, implicit multiplication, other variables/functions, variable exponents and repeated powers are unsupported. Use ASCII - for a negative sign; Unicode − is not supported.

Limits: 240 characters, 24 nested levels, 120 input nodes, 2,500 generated operations and 12,000 result characters. Only elementary simplifications are applied.

Symbolic derivative

Rule trace (inner expressions first)

The formula applies only where the original expression is defined and differentiable over the reals. Denominators must be nonzero; ln arguments must be positive. Simplification never extends the original domain. Angles are in radians. No domain solver or numerical evaluation is provided.

    GOOD TO KNOW

    Common questions

    Is this a numerical approximation?

No. The tool applies symbolic differentiation rules to the supported grammar. It does not use finite differences or execute source code.
