Steps to Distance

Estimate walking distance from steps and height, or calculate average step length from a measured distance and step count.

In-browser processingNo account requiredPrivacy details ↗

Steps must be a whole number from 1 to 100,000,000. Height must be from 30 to 300 cm (11.811 to 118.11 in).

Estimate only: single-step length = height × 0.415; actual stride varies.

A QUICK WALKTHROUGH

How to use this tool

  1. Choose estimated distance or average step length.
  2. Enter a whole-number step count and height, or a measured distance in metres, kilometres or miles.
  3. Calculate and review the result and its limitations.

Formula and units

Estimated step length = height × 0.415. Distance = steps × estimated step length. Average step length = measured distance ÷ steps. Distance is shown in metres, kilometres and miles; average step length in metres, centimetres and inches.

Estimate only

The 0.415 factor is a general estimate. Actual stride varies with the person, pace, terrain and footwear. This is not measurement-grade or medical guidance.

One step and a two-step stride

A single step is D ÷ N; the technical stride is two steps: 2D ÷ N. Steps per kilometre = 1000N ÷ D. Measure distance and count steps over the same interval. Pace, fatigue, gradient and GPS error affect the average; this does not prescribe an ideal gait.

GOOD TO KNOW

Common questions

Does this measure my actual walking distance?

No. The height mode estimates distance. The measured-distance mode divides your own distance by your step count and returns average length per step, not sensor measurement. Inputs stay in this browser and are not uploaded or stored.

Is a stride always one step?

No. This tool labels a single step separately from a two-step stride (one full left-right cycle). Some watches call a single step a stride, so check the definition before comparing.
