Check U.S. SSN Format
Enter an SSN-shaped string to inspect its public format boundaries without sending or saving the input.
A QUICK WALKTHROUGH
How to use this tool
- Enter nine digits, with optional hyphens in the usual 3-2-4 layout.
- Run the local character, length, and public range checks.
- Read the format result and its limits; no identity or issuance check is performed.
Public structure only
This tool checks nine digits, optional 3-2-4 hyphens, and public numbering boundaries: area 001–899 except 666, group 01–99, and serial 0001–9999. Since 2011, SSNs are assigned randomly, so this tool does not infer a location or issue date.
Never an identity or validity check
A passing result does not prove that an SSN is real, issued, assigned, belongs to anyone, active, or usable. This tool has no government, credit-bureau, employer, or database connection.
Local and ephemeral
Processing happens in this browser only. The entered value is not uploaded, recorded, persisted, or logged.
GOOD TO KNOW
Common questions
Does a pass mean the SSN is real or valid?
No. It means only that the string matches the public structural boundaries shown here. It does not verify issuance, assignment, identity, or use.
Which boundaries are checked?
The tool checks nine digits, the optional 3-2-4 hyphen layout, area 001–899 except 666, group 01–99, and serial 0001–9999.
Is the number sent or stored?
No. The check runs locally in your browser and does not upload, record, persist, or log the input.
